How We Tested

If you've used tallow before to not see much improvement or you even broke out, there may be several reasons why. Mainly being the tallow quality and manufacturing process. For example if the tallow is from random fat trimmings, it is usually lower quality and not as pure, which can cause breakouts. We took all this into account when testing and examining the different brands:

  1. Grass-fed sourcing

An animal’s diet can affect the fatty-acid and antioxidant profile of its fat. Grass-fed beef contains more omega-3 fatty acids, CLA, carotenoids, and vitamin E.

  2. Suet-derived tallow

Suet is the fat surrounding the kidneys. It has a much higher nutrient density than non-suet fat. It contains more fat-soluble vitamins: A, D, E, and K, and beneficial fatty acids such as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). It also offers better biocompatibility, greater purity, and a cleaner scent.

  3. Non-whipped formulation

Whipping incorporates air and increases the balm’s volume without increasing the amount of tallow by weight. Greater exposure to oxygen also accelerates oxidation, which shortens freshness and alters the balm’s scent, colour, and texture.

  4. Supporting ingredients

Tallow by itself is fantastic for skin and better than a lot of other general solutions. But supporting ingredients can significantly improve its effectiveness.

  5. Essential oils and fragrance

Essential oils and fragrances can improve scent, but they can also contain recognised contact allergens. This is especially important for people with eczema, damaged skin barriers, or fragrance sensitivities.

  6. Scent

All tallow balms will have atleast a light beefy smell - that can't be helped. But a strong beef-like aroma may indicate inadequate rendering, low quality tallow, or may even suggest suggest oxidation.

PROS

  • Tallow is from grassfed cows and derived from suet
  • Non-whipped
  • Texture is easy to work with and spreads easily
  • Fantastic supporting ingredients - the most complete out of all the ones we tested
  • 0.5% dilution of Essential oils. This is a low enough amount where it doesn't effect the skin at all but gives a nice fragrance
  • Slightly earthy and flowery scent mixed together due to other ingredients. Did not smell beefy at all
  • Part of a full tallow based set that work well together to create a full routine
  • Hand made in house

CONS

  • Made in small batches, so often out of stock

THE BOTTOM LINE

This brand seems to be aimed towards creating a complete simple tallow based routine so the approach is different from others. The complete routine consists of this Renewal balm which they advertise as best used before bed, but looking at the ingredients you could easily use it during daytime too. It's aimed towards restoration with tallow coupled with skin-cell renewal and collagen promotion from bakuchiol, sea buckthorn and rosehip oil. Their "daytime" Origin balm is similar to other Tallow and Honey Balms in terms of key ingredients and doesn't do much for skin-cell renewal and collagen promotion but the beeswax is fantastic for daytime shield and extra nourishment. So I can see why they advertise it as daytime use and the renewal balm as night time use. Qutie clever. They also have a Clarifying face scrub which I tried and my skin did feel really good afterwards. Not the regular "dried out" feeling you get from most cleansers, but refreshed and clean. So it's a 3 product routine that seems to cover all skin needs.
